Life on California's beautiful Central Coast

Pt. Alberni farm stay

Because we weren’t too impressed with the east side of the island, yesterday we headed over to the west and made it about halfway. Pt. Alberni was our stop, and its a salmon fishing town with a beautiful river, the Somass.

We camped at a farm, which was really awesome. Had a fresh tomato for the first time in two months! The owner, Mrs. Collins, also made delicious zucchini-chocolate chip muffins and I was able to buy some of those. We went swimming in the Somass (the farm had river access) which was really relaxing and lovely until a group of rafters came down — with full stereo systems playing Snoop Dogg and Britney Spears in their boats. That was a little ridiculous.

If you ever go to Pt. Alberni and go camping, I highly recommend the Arrowvale campground. We only knew about it because of a random copy of the B.C. Lonely Planet guide that we happened to read snippets of at a restaurant a few days ago. It’s also where we got our great sushi tip, so I guess those guides are where its at!
