Life on California's beautiful Central Coast

Ouray’s amazing perimeter trail

Ouray calls itself America’s Switzerland, and having just traversed their Perimeter Trail, I’m going to let them have this slightly hyperbolic nickname.

The trail is about halfway up the steep mountains surrounding town and involves a tunnel, bridges over steep gorges with rushing rivers, beautiful views and some very slippery descents. I hiked most of it for fear of falling.

In short sequence, you come up this cliff.

Through this tunnel..

Through this tunnel..

And onto this bridge.

And onto this bridge.

From the bridge, you can see some of the geology that Ouray is famous for, the layers of rock that are known as the Great Unconformity because they account for long periods of unaccounted for geologic time.

Looking up into higher country from the trail.

Erik thinks Telluride is more like Switzerland because they have a gondola.

Looking down on town. The road leads up to the ampitheatre campground and on to Silverton.
