Life on California's beautiful Central Coast

Turning sulphur into gold

Pagosa Springs has been working on getting tourists to appreciate its mineral water offerings since 1890. Just about now, they’re hitting on the money.

Here’s a picture of the Disneyesque layout along the river, right in the middle of town. The hot tubs are filled with treated sulphur spring water. Yes, it smells like rotten eggs here. The big hotel on the right is a brand new $12 million project that just opened last week.

I stopped in at the local newspaper, the “Pagosa Springs Sun,” and asked if there were any community websites covering local events. The woman behind the counter made a face, said there were, but that she “really didn’t know what they were.”

Property here is expensive! Clearly a coveted vacation destination.
