Life on California's beautiful Central Coast

Jackson, WY

All I remember about being here as a teenager was the sourdough pancakes that I didn’t like very much. There are a little under 9,000 residents in Jackson and according to the Wyoming tourism guide, “everyone likes it.”

It’s too expensive and probably has just a little bit too much going on to be liveable in a realistic way, but this is still a fun town.

Lander, WY

I’m a little out of order here. We were in Lander about 24 hours ago and really liked it. Very cool Wyoming town, our favorite so far (sorry, Jackson). Just the right mix of old-timey history, a brewery called the Cowfish, multiple bookstores, and even some cute clothing shops. Had the temperature not been 94 degrees, we would have stayed. Instead, we did a long driving day to end up in the Grand Tetons today.

These mountains are just as beautiful, if not more so, than I remember from my first trip here 15 years ago with my family. Cool addition since then: a bike path from Moose to Jenny Lake.

Dubois, WY is the wild west

This is cheesy, but really didn't look fake in person.

These are silly pictures, but in reality Dubois is in a lovely area along the Wind River. To get there we drove through the Shoshone Reservation, one of the nicest reservations I have ever been on in terms of natural beauty. They are building a casino, but it is small and close to Lander (I think they have another one up toward Riverston.) Sacajawea, guide for Lewis and Clark, was a Shoshone. We tried to find her gravesite but didn’t quite succeed.

And now, for the most embarrassing shot of me since the mechanical bull at the Mid-State Fair in the Tribune debacle ..

At least it doesn't try to buck you off.

Sorry about the earlier technical difficulties with this post.

It was still snowy, which may be why the campground wasn't officially open and we got to stay for free.

Wide open Wyoming

We’re on our way to Lander, about 200 miles northwest of Laramie, just below the Wind River Indian Reservation. It’s a beautiful day but there are signs of the vicious Wyoming weather everywhere. I have a feeling we’re going to lose signal once we turn north at Rawlins, so I may not be able to post again today.

Wow. AT&T is not my friend this week. My cell phone died yesterday and today it’s taking ages to upload photos. So much for the wide open spaces being beneficial to cell signals.

Funny billboard that I didn’t get a shot of had a cowboy talking on a cell and the slogan “phone, phone on the range.”

Just passed Sinclair, Wyoming, where oil is pumped from the ground and natural gas burned off into the sky.

We want to say thanks to Annie and Carl for the great tips and dinner last night, and wish Annie well on her first day of work today!

Well, it took so long to upload those photos that now we’re in Rawlins!
