Life on California's beautiful Central Coast

The lake and the litterbugs

lake blog
We spent part of today at Cochiti Lake, a man-made lake in the middle of the high desert, less than a mile from Erik’s mom’s house.
We wanted to go the far side of the lake to try to catch some fish, which is less than a mile and a half from the town of Cochiti.
However, you have to drive all the way around, about 20 miles, to get there. Beautiful drive on a wide open road with 360 degree views of the thunderheads collecting over the mountains in the distance.
The lake is stocked with fish, including bass, and even though they kept jumping within feet of E’s bait, they didn’t bite.
Incredibly disappointing, and not visible in this photo, was the volume of trash thrown from people’s boats that had washed up on the lake shore.
I filled up a big plastic bag with beer bottles, plastic chunks, Capri Sun packages and plastic bags but barely made a dent in the mess. If I’d had a box of bags with me I could have stayed out there all day collecting trash. It made me really sad to see such disregard for the natural environment. This is evident on New Mexico roadsides, too – trash strewn all over the place.
